Ours was finding a half bison bull that had good fertility and freezable semen that could be exported for overseas use. Such a bull could infuse his higher percentage bison genetic mix quickly into a herd of cattle, increasing there performance and efficiency as well as producing top quality beef.
In early 2004 we found such a bull at the Bradley Ranch in Ely, Nevada. He was a half bison-half Charolais bull, producing some really nice calf crops. By June of 2005, purchase was finalized and Bold Venture, then 5 years old, was directly transported to Hawkeye Breeders in Adel, Iowa for semen collection, and clearance for overseas markets.
Bold Venture presented a great opportunity. To the best of our information, no new bison hybrid or Beefalo bulls had been developed for export since the 90’s. This bull could fill the demand for new genetics breeders were searching for. His blood line was unique, not descending from any already established Beefalo families or other biso-beef bloodlines.
The initial report on Bold Venture from Hawkeye was even better than expected. The bull was gentle, easy to handle, and could be collected naturally. His semen quality was excellent, froze well, and could be exported to the major cattle producing areas of the world.
Fertile half bison bulls are rare, but here is one of them, and he is a good looking bull by anyone’s standards. Bold Venture has decided bovine phenotype (looks more like a beef bull, than a buffalo) but has subtle bison attributes. Even though he tips the scales around 2,000 lbs. his calves average about 60 lbs. at birth.
If you want bison influence in your cattle, this is the bull to do it. Bred to straight cattle, your offspring will be quarter bison. His calves have outstanding hybrid vigor as well as all of the other attributes credited to bison blend cattle. His semen is available for immediate overseas shipment as well as here in the USA.
